16 August Birthday Gift Ideas for the Women and Men in Your Life

Whoever said that gift guides have to be reserved for the  holiday season? Here at Who What Wear, we're proponents of year-round gift guides. There always seems to be someone with an upcoming birthday, so you might as well be prepared (gifts purchased in a last-minute haste aren't usually the best gifts).

While we're all for thoughtful gifts, we think the best sort of gift is one that the recipient will actually use. Accordingly, we sourced an assortment of covetable gifts for both women and men this time, and none of them will cause harm to your bank account. For August, we're endorsing a statement-making pair of sunglasses, a couple of cool patriotic pieces, and our new favorite T-shirt. We guarantee that any one of these 16 stylish gifts will bring a smile to the birthday boy or girl’s face and subsequently a feeling of gift-giving success on your part.

This Will Be the Blazer to Own Come Fall

We totally get that talking about fall trends in the high heat of July can feel a bit incongruous, but if you’re obsessed with fashion like we are, you likely are keen to look forward. So after you fan yourself off after a sweaty morning commute to work, cool down with a look at one of fall’s coolest trends that we’re excited to present to you today.

One of the more playful themes from the F/W 16 collections was the archetypal topic of back to school. Though many of us have traded in our textbooks for spreadsheets and conference calls, there’s still something about the beginning of autumn that makes us want to slip into crisp oxford shirts, cardigans, and loafers. So when we spotted not one, not two, but many collegiate-inspired blazers pop up on our favorite e-commerce sites, we knew this was no coincidence. Whether or not you went to boarding school (this author certainly didn’t), thanks to this cool jacket, you can relive your academic years in style.

See below for a look at which ones to buy right now, and a few examples of how to wear it.

What It's Really Like to Dress the Bachelorette, According to Her Stylist

WWW: JoJo has 1.5 million Instagram followers and counting! What role does social media play when it comes to dressing the girls? Has it changed the process over the years?

CF: It has changed my life completely. Last year, Chris Harrison made me go on [Instagram], and I was the last of the people to do it. Just with myself, I see how the comments both help and have even me worrying about what the people are going to say, and is it worth taking the chance? JoJo and all of these girls come into it knowing what people have said about past Bachelorettes. They could be beaten up or loved, just depending upon how social media is treating them. It’s made them so much more careful and so much less willing to take chances. I, on the other hand, find it even more important to push them and take a chance.

We had a dress that I wanted [JoJo] to wear for one of the events, and she said, “I will be crucified on social media if I wear that.” And I said, “But so what?” The same people who hate it will love it. You can’t rule your life by what others are going to say on social media. Once in a while, [the girls] embrace it or choose to be in on the joke with me. I remember Michelle Money (she was one of the contestants years ago) coming to me, and she had a really beautiful, normal dress, and then she had this sheer dress that she had gotten, and I said “Listen, I can tell you this—you will be the talk tomorrow. Now whether or not you want the talk is up to you. You can’t really allow the people who are going to hate it to signal to you what you should do.” And she wore it and she was a sensation in it. The Bachelor loved it, I thought it was amazing, and social media and the press loved it. So it’s a huge part of it. It just depends on how frightened you allow it to make you.

How to Pull Off Leggings When It's 90 Degrees

No clothing item seems quite as pervasive these days as a good pair of leggings. With the advent of athleisure, they seem to have become not just the go-to for a trip to the gym, but for a coffee run and even a cross-continental flight. But come summer, we’ve all faced the tough dilemma: Can we pull them off when it’s scorching outside? Will we be overcome by our own leg sweat?

Well, if we’re judging by example, there are ways to make these all-purpose pants work for you, even when the temperatures soar. It’s all about the way you style them. We looked to some of the biggest leggings advocates for inspiration, stars like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner who have proved time and time again, that you can really wear them for any occasion. Prepare to be inspired, and breathe easy—you won’t have to give up your go-to.

Read on for a few ways to pull off leggings come summer.

Rihanna Stepped Out in the Coolest Outfit in France (Again)

It's safe to say Rihanna is the master of taking major fashion risks and making them work, at least in the celebrity world. All hail queen RiRi! She seriously wears whatever she wants and somehow always makes it work. I mean, she wore socks with heels out to a club and looked cool. We're always on the edge of our seats waiting for the next trendy thing Rihanna will try out.

Rihanna tends to up her style game even more when she's in France. The latest trend she wore when she stepped out overseas was nothing short of shocking. She somehow made a fur stole look totally natural to wear out in the middle of summer. She styled the piece from Fendi with an oversize shirt and skirt set, as well as her namesake heels from Dsquared2. Although the strappy shoes and furry accessory would normally be a little fancy for daytime wear, the rest of her outfit had the perfect "I just threw this on" vibe to balance it all out. What can we say—Rihanna just has that je ne sais quoi.

Where to Buy Shoes When You Have Really Small Feet

It wasn't until recently that I became aware of the fact that people with really tiny feet (i.e. any size smaller than a 6) have a particularly hard time finding shoes in their size. Call me ignorant, but I had always assumed that it was the people with larger feet (i.e. anything bigger than size 9) who had the difficult time. Sadly, both are true, but this story is focusing on the teensy-footed people of the world, and we are here to solve all of their problems (as far as shopping goes).

My co-worker (and friend) falls under the category of "small feet," coming in hot with a solid size 5. I am always sending her links to shoes I think she would love, and time and time again, I manage to disappoint her, as I forget to check to see if they come in her size. While I have gotten slightly better at being considerate of her tiny-feet problems, I am still shocked at how few retailers actually sell shoes in sizes smaller than a 6. With a little research and a few tips from my friend, we were able to nail down a handful of incredible retailers that sell the small sizes you have been searching for in the cutest styles possible. Use these as your guide the next time you are in need of a new pair of shoes, instead of getting let down by a style you cannot have.

Keep reading to discover the best retailers that sell some of the smallest sizes around and to shop our picks from each!

The Best Jewelry to Wear to the Beach (and What to Leave at Home)

While we all love the celebrity- and blogger-endorsed look of layered jewelry at the beach, if you want to be able to rewear those pieces post–Instagram shot, it’s important to know which will and won’t hold up when exposed to the elements. Well, we did some digging around, and it turns out there are some pretty basic don’ts to keep in mind.

To start, metals such as copper, pewter, and sterling silver are more likely to tarnish from salt water and sweat, so when possible, avoid those and stick to gold, rose gold, white gold, and platinum (should you be lucky enough to own an item made of the celebrity-approved metal.) Regardless of the metal though, stick to dainty pieces that have a lot of movement if you want to avoid thick tan lines you’d get from clunkier items like a cuff bracelet or statement necklace.

Once you’ve hit the beach, the overall consensus is that it’s imperative you wash your jewelry (no matter the metal) with water and a gentle soap after a beach day to get rid of any residual saltwater that can cause it to rust or tarnish.

Now, as for what you should wear to the beach, we reached out to Jacquie Aiche, purveyor of the layered jewelry look and designer to stars that include Rihanna and Kendall Jenner to get the scoop. Her advice?  Since summer is prime time to layer, she recommends taking the opportunity to accessorize your bikini with bodychains, diamond bras, and anklets.

For a boho look, consider horn-embellished accessories, and if you’re looking to bring out that tan, gemstones such as blue and rainbow opals, turquoise, green tourmaline, and rutilated quartz will help you do so. Aiche also recommends avoiding chunky pieces if you’re going for an effortless vibe.

Now that you know what to wear and avoid seaside, shop our beach day–approved picks below!

15 Reformation Dresses That Are Very Taylor Swift

Just when we all thought Taylor Swift was sticking with her edgy new makeover, she threw us a curveball and found her way back to the sweet, vintage-inspired style that we all know her for (at least for the time being). In fact, Swift has been loyal to the cool girl–favorite brand for several years now. (Can you blame her?) And because we're happy to have any excuse to sift through Reformation's endless array of covetable dresses, we took it upon ourselves to find the ones with the most Taylor Swift appeal. Our criteria? We've found that she tends to favor fit-and-flare styles, sweet prints, minidresses, and matching sets. Margot Robbie's Fresh Summer Outfit Is Probably Hanging in Your Closet

When we start spotting items from a particular brand on more than one celebrity in the span of a few weeks, we stop and take notice. Odds are that designer is about to become majorly popular with the rest of the fashion world, too. The latest brand to do so is none other than Ulla Johnson, which has a fan in many a celeb for its pretty patterned dresses.

Margot Robbie wore a top from the designer in Toronto this week while promoting her upcoming film Suicide Squad. She kept things simple and let the top speak for itself, pairing the floaty peasant blouse with a pair of AMO jeans and two-strap sandals. Even if you don't already own any Ulla Johnson items for yourself, chances are you can recreate this outfit with what's already in your closet. Simply pair a silky patterned shirt with your favorite pair of jeans, cuff the hems, and add some summery sandals. Voila! You've instantly mastered Robbie's chic ensemble.

The Kind of Yoga Pants You Should Never, Ever Buy

Thanks to the incredible rise of athleisure, leggings are okay to wear as pants (under the right circumstances, of course). According to a study conducted by Social Context Labs, yoga pants are actually the most talked about trend in the United States. Of course, there are still a lot of us out there that wear yoga pants for their actual purpose, exercise. That's why you might be shocked to know that a lot of the ones you're probably buying are pretty bad for working out in.

According to professor Rachel McQueen of the University of Alberta who studies how textiles develop and retain smell, the synthetic stretchy stuff is totally not made to sweat it out in. She shared with Refinery 29 the worst culprit of them all—polyester. McQueen said, "Polyester, which is required to make clothing stretchy, is non-polar and non-absorbent. This is what makes it so famously “sweat-wicking.” On top of that, because it repels water, polyester is harder to clean in the washing machine, which might be why, even after you wash your workout clothes, the odor sometimes doesn’t go away. Odors cling to polyester’s surface and waft away slowly over time, leading to a continuous stink all day." Gross!

Luckily, there are lesser evils out there when it comes to clothing materials. Cotton, for example, only becomes a problem when in a continuously wet environment. As long as you take your cotton yoga pants off after your workout to wash and dry them as soon as possible, you can still avoid the smelly leggings situation.

This Under-the-Radar Korean Brand Is Delightfully Wacky

What Shoes to Wear With Your Off-the-Shoulder Top

It's no secret that the off-the-shoulder top is one of the biggest trends of the summer. From street style stars to celebrities, seriously everyone is wearing some iteration of the top. Plus, it's a favorite of Olivia Palermo's, so it's definitely a must-have piece in our book.

We just spotted one of the freshest new ways to wear this style on model Jourdan Dunn. She stepped out at the airport in a floaty pinstriped number, which she styled with a pair of cropped Frame Denim jeans and (get this!) driving shoes. Before we get to the shoes, let's take a second to appreciate the rest of the outfit.

First off, the shoulder-strap details and ruffly arms of her top make this popular shirt style so much more unique. Secondly, cropped jeans are so on trend, and perfect for showing a little more skin for summer. Finally, the shoes—they're Tod's leather Gommino driving shoes, which not only look so comfortable but are also made totally chic by the double-T buckle detailing. All in all, Jourdan's outfit gets an A+ from us.

Not Even the Biggest Gossip Girl Fans Know This

For the fashion girl, watching TV is more than just a hobby or time for relaxation—so many TV shows are a great source for studying up on the latest fashion trends! One of the most iconic of these was Gossip Girl. Even though the show ended four years ago (much to our dismay), we're still inspired all the time by the series's fashionable characters. We love thinking about what Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf would wear today.

This nostalgia is why we were so excited to see that PopSugar decided to revisit the style from the show and share behind-the-scenes wardrobe secrets that even die-hard fans might not know. Some of the most exciting information we gleaned from the piece? The original inspiration behind Blair and Serena's iconic style.

According to costume designer Eric Daman in an interview with The Huffington Post, Serena's nonchalant je ne sais quois was modeled after Kate Moss. In complete contrast, Blair's totally put-together chicness was based on a mix of the old-school glamour of Audrey Hepburn and the meticulousness of Anna Wintour. We can totally see it now that we know, and we love each of their style aesthetics all the more for it.

Lily Aldridge's $58 Bodysuit Is Perfect for Going Out

When it comes to dressing for a night out, there are a lot of things to think about. Heels or flats? A dress or pants? Things become a little more difficult in the summer when you have the heat to think about and those leather skinnies are no longer an option. That's where the bodysuit comes in. Once a garment only for ballet class or the most daring of fashion girls, the bodysuit has now become an essential for the modern woman's wardrobe. The right ones are seriously flattering, and you never have to worry about your top staying tucked. What's not to like?

Plenty of celebs are on the same page as us. Lily Aldridge, for one, just wore the coolest lace bodysuit out for Victoria's Secret press day that we would love to try for a night out. The unique double-V cut (it dips in both the front and back) is just the right amount of sultry. She wore hers in a deep olive color paired with a pleated maxi skirt and statement leopard booties, all of which we loved. The best part about this bodysuit? It's only $58.

Our Editors Can't Get Enough of This Denim Shirt

There’s nothing like a great closet staple that works year-round and can be worn different ways to fit any personal style. This denim shirt from Equipment fits the bill to a T, so it’s no wonder it’s on our editors’ radar.

The military style boasts two front pockets and epaulets for a more structured feel. As mentioned earlier, it can be worn a multitude of ways, but our first preference is just like the lookbook inspiration—with black flared jeans for a classic, easy look. Another styling idea is to layer the shirt, unbuttoned, over your favorite floral-print dress and complete the look with suede ankle boots. Or, for a more polished outfit, try tucking the shirt into a pleated black leather skirt and topping things off with a chain-strap mini bag and lace-up sandals.

The One Thing Olivia Palermo Packs to Make a Hotel Feel Like Home

So you’re going on a trip. You’ve remembered to pack all the necessities, like your toothbrush, makeup, socks, pajamas, and more. What’s missing? Well if you’re Olivia Palermo, there’s one simple yet luxurious item that makes all the difference.

In a new interview with Allure, Palermo revealed her favorite travel essential. “It’s important to bring things that make your hotel room feel comfortable, and for me, that’s Jo Malone or Diptyque travel candles,” she told Allure. “The scents give me a lift and make me feel at home and at peace.” We’ll admit it: We’re usually too focused on planning weather-appropriate outfits and keeping clothes wrinkle-free to be concerned with making a hotel feel like home. But Palermo officially convinced us that we’re overlooking this important detail—consider candles on our permanent packing lists from now on.

Taylor Swift Just Wore the Fanciest Flats for Date Night

Taylor Swift gives us style inspiration no matter where she is. For starters, she inspired our next summer picnic look while she was in Rome and gave us pointers for our next midi dress purchase when she was in Australia. Now, Swift and Tom Hiddleston have been spotted in sunny Santa Monica, California, and of course she's offering up another great outfit idea.

This time around, we're in love with her fancy flats. She opted for Nicholas Kirkwood's Casati Embellished Metallic Patent-Leather Sandals ($695), which are the perfect date night option for girls who don't like wearing heels. The rose gold metallic hue makes them suitable for after dark, while the pearl embellishment gives them a luxurious twist. Plus, the T-strap silhouette feels more elevated than slides or thong sandals. If you want to splurge on the shoes, you'd be wise to pair them with an all-black outfit like Swift's to let your sandals take center stage.

Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals Her Surprising Plans for Goop

Gwyneth Paltrow has big plans for Goop, but they don't actually involve her. As Vanity Fair reports, Paltrow spoke at a panel for Chicago's Sage Summit this week, where the actress-turned-entrepreneur dished about the future of her website and how she'd prefer to distance herself from the company she's built.

"In order to build the brand I want to build, its scalability is limited if I connect it to the brand,” she said at the summit. "So I always think how can I grow the brand, how can I separate myself from the brand, and I think it's going to be more its own brand. More and more, I would like it to be its own brand—my dream is that one day no one will remember that I had anything to do with it." Only time will tell if Paltrow's new plan will take her company to the next level—but in the meantime, we'll keep reveling in our daily dose of Goop.

The Fall Jewelry Trend Georgia May Jagger Predicts Will Be Big

Last week in a picturesque suite at The Bowery Hotel I sat down with British Model Georgia May Jagger over a cup of tea (well, I had water in a teacup, but we can pretend) to discuss her partnership with jewelry brand Thomas Sabo. I was admittedly a bit over enthusiastic to meet the daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall (who wouldn’t be?), and though as editors we interview celebrities all of the time, this particular run-in was especially exciting. Jagger casually stepped out on the terrace to meet with me in a pink Reformation dress and her signature blond waves. She was down-to-earth, sweet, and had a thing or two to say about jewelry. Scroll down to read our interview and find out what her most prized jewelry possession is, her prediction for fall’s biggest jewelry trend, and more.

This Is the Model-Off-Duty Staple of 2016

You've probably noticed by now that there's a model-off-duty "look" that consists of certain brands, outfit formulas, trends, and recurring pieces. It's not that they all want to dress alike, per se. Given their vocation, models have some of the best style around (hence the reason we're all on a constant mission to emulate them).

They have their pick of the coolest pieces and are in the know about the biggest current and future trends. Additionally, they tend to gravitate toward comfortable clothing when they're not working, which is why they can't help but wear pieces like leggings. And what pairs perfectly with leggings and skinny jeans? An oversize denim jacket, of course. It provides a bit of coverage and balances out the slimness of the pants.

We've seen more models than we can count as of late wearing their oversize denim jackets on repeat. From Bella Hadid to Karlie Kloss, we rounded up a few of our favorite instances where models have used an oversize denim jacket to amp up that cool factor they all consistently seem to achieve so effortlessly.

Check them out below, and be sure to shop our oversize denim jacket picks at the end!

How to Wear Nostalgic Dresses Without Looking Kitschy

The neckline du jour for the last two seasons has decidedly been a high-rise ruffle with Victorian influences. And though the last couple of months of summer have caused these silhouettes to shimmy down to an off-the-shoulder look, we’re already dreaming of what Vogue referred to in its F/W 16 trend report as the “period pieces” that swept down the runways. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Gucci experimented with high-impact details like voluminous sleeves and full skirts that for us feel decadently nostalgic.

However, that brings us to the subject of today’s post. How does one pull off said nostalgic dress without looking like they’re a character in a play or an earnest Halloween partygoer? We turned to street style stars and celebs to answer that question, and what we found was that it’s not as difficult as it may seem. See below for examples from the likes of Alexa Chung and Veronika Heilbrunner, and to give your wardrobe a blast from the past, shop our picks at the end.

See How Pernille Teisbaek Styles a Vintage-Style Band Tee

We can always count on Pernille Teisbaek, our recent Street Style Star winner of 2015, to gives us a fresh perspective on how to style some of our classic go-tos, in this case our favorite vintage-style band tee. The It-blogger shared her recent vacation looks with Vogue and shows us that it's time to break away from always wearing the piece with denim, and try something a bit more elevated.

Next time we reach for the tee we are opting to go all out with her whimsical outfit inspiration in mind. So, rather than wear it with our usual jeans, cutoff shorts or denim skirt, we'll stick with a pair of white mirrored sunglasses, statement drop earrings, high-waisted white pants, a fun feather or fringed embellished basket tote bag, and fashion-forward mules.

This Plus-Size Blogger Found the Best $33 Jeans at Old Navy

If you’re not familiar with Awasthi’s style, she’s a pro at styling denim and flattering top combinations. And if you click through to see where her jeans are from more often than not, she’s wearing a pair from Old Navy’s Rockstar collection. Which she notes on her blog are true to size. Selena Gomez's Amazing New Tour Outfit Is So '90s

If you've been lucky enough to catch a Selena Gomez concert during her Revival tour, you know her onstage outfits have been nothing short of amazing. (Think glittery bodysuits, ethereal dresses, embellished jackets, and more.) But now that she's embarked on a new leg of her tour—she'll be stopping in Thailand, the Philippines, and Japan in the upcoming days—she's introducing an amazing new look that we're crazy about.

According to the official Revival tour Instagram, her head-to-toe leather outfit is vintage. She's wearing an embellished crop top with leather trousers, topping off the look with some throwback sunglasses and a dark lip. It's a ridiculously cool look that's edgy and '90s-inspired yet in keeping with her personal style. Though we don't exactly recommend head-to-toe leather for hot summer days, this is a look we're certainly taking note of.

What French Women Never Wear on Their Wedding Day

You might have noticed that we're not shy about our love for all things French style here at Who What Wear. We're dying to know where Parisian girls shop, what style rules they live by, and more. So when we found out that Vogue.com interviewed French wedding dress designers about local women's bridal preferences, we were all ears.

Armed with their first-hand knowledge, the designers offered insight into how French women choose their wedding dresses. For starters, there's one thing they avoid: anything too played out or cookie-cutter. "French brides love the idea of being unique and a bit offbeat," wedding dress designer Laure de Sagazan told Vogue.com. "It’s rare that a bride comes to see me saying that she wants the same dress as this celebrity or a dress she saw in a magazine. They search for singularity."

As for popular silhouettes, de Sagazan says that French women go for streamlined looks. "Parisian brides generally ask for easy, slip-style silhouettes and a relaxed skirt with an A-line waist and short train...They think a lot about their wedding dress but the secret is that nobody can see it. Most of the time when you look at a French bride it looks like she picked her dress last-minute.” Curious to learn more about French designers' insights? Head over to Vogue.com to read the full article.

This Is Officially the Prettiest Thing to Wear Right Now

First of all, if you haven't been following Margot Robbie's incredible outfits while out and about promoting Suicide Squad, you definitely need to. The Aussie actress has been giving us one swoon-worthy look after another (props to her stylist Kate Young), and her latest off-duty outfit is no exception.

Robbie wore a heat wave–appropriate mini black slip dress and lace-up sandals topped off with what is undoubtedly the prettiest thing to wear this summer (it's also a Gigi Hadid favorite): a kimono. It's perfect over a short dress or shorts, as it adds a little extra coverage. Lightweight kimonos lend an ethereal vibe, especially Robbie's, with its eyelet detail and soft, feminine color. We were surprised to learn that it's not just any kimono—it’s a bridal kimono, meant to be worn on your wedding morning and honeymoon. But we would have to agree with Robbie that it's too pretty to not wear out in the world.

You'll Never Guess Where Mila Kunis Bought Her $90 Wedding Band

Not every celebrity is into over-the-top, expensive wedding details. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, for instance, opted for a very simple courthouse ceremony, where Bell actually nixed a wedding gown in favor of black pants. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, as it turns out, had a similarly low-key approach—at least when it came to their wedding bands.

Kunis appeared on Conan last night, where she revealed that her band only cost $90—and came from Etsy! "My husband got me a beautiful engagement ring, stunning," she said on the show. "But for our wedding bands, I decided to just get them off Etsy. I wanted the thinnest possible platinum band. It's super thin. I looked at how much Tiffany's are, and I was like, 'They're how much? This is astronomical!' So I went on Etsy and it was $90, and I [clicked] buy now."

Kunis also revealed that Kutcher's only cost slightly more: $100. Isn't their fuss-free approach super refreshing? As we all know, there's no need to spend a fortune on your wedding band or engagement ring

How Anna Wintour Is Affecting Hillary Clinton's Style

Anna Wintour has made it no secret that she's a proud supporter of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, having worn T-shirts showing her allegiance on multiple occasions and even co-hosting a recent high-profile fundraiser for Clinton along with other past fashion industry fundraisers for the presidential hopeful.

The native Brit's involvement with the campaign is of the more sartorial nature as well, as we just learned from Business of Fashion. As the fashion news source printed this morning, "Clinton has been consulting American Vogue editor-in-chief and Democratic party fundraiser Anna Wintour on her wardrobe choices for key moments of the campaign. … On certain occasions, Wintour has approached designers to procure outfits for Clinton, who has settled into a uniform of brightly coloured pantsuits and jackets by US designers."

BoF interviewed personal stylist to politicians Corey Roche on the subject of dressing candidates for campaigns, who said, "There is [campaign] money allocated to fashion and clothes, because that is a huge part of marketing and branding." As Clinton accepts the nomination to be the first female presidential candidate tonight, all attention will be turned to not only what she says, but also what she wears for the historical occasion. And it appears that Wintour will have had a hand in that.
