How We're Celebrating 10 Years of Who What Wear

What do you remember about 2006?

Well, for starters, you probably weren’t reading this on your phone, because the iPhone didn’t exist. It’s highly probable that you were into MySpace that year, or maybe you were in college and had a Facebook account to check. It’s also possible you didn’t spend much time online at all, other than to check out party picture websites (WireImage) to see what fashion-forward celebs (the Olsens) wore while out and about (at Hyde) the night before, write about their style choices and how they fit into the fashion cycle as a whole, and link to where to buy those exact items.

Oh wait, that was us!

As of this month, we’ve officially been in business for 10 years, and it’s honestly rather astonishing to think about how much WhoWhatWear.com and the digital world have changed over the last decade. When we started this company, we published one story a day and felt so tremendously lucky and grateful that we immediately connected with you, dear readers. Since then, this company has grown to include four content brands, a line of clothing and accessories at Target, three books, and even UK and Australia site expansions.

So what’s stayed the same? Well, we still feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have the greatest audience in the world, and we cannot thank you enough for your amazing support over the years. You make this all possible, so thank you, thank you, thank you!

On that note, in thinking back over the past decade of work and getting a little nostalgic about all the amazing style-minded women and fashion trends we’ve covered, we had an idea. What if we brought the last 10 years of Who What Wear to life? It sounds a little crazy, but we decided to do just that and are so excited to announce the #WWW10 Experience.

This Thursday, November 3, through Sunday, November 13, we’re unveiling a museum retrospective dedicated to the past decade of fashion, pop culture, and street style, all from the Who What Wear perspective. It will include everything from an exhibition of Nicole Richie’s go-to sunglasses to a room dedicated to every major denim moment over the last 10 years. All the Fashion Girls Are Wearing This Leggings-Pants Hybrid

Though we’ve traditionally associated stirrup pants with equestrian dress and ’80s workout attire (hello, Jane Fonda), these athletic bottoms have once again made their way into the spotlight. The $30 Pants That One Editor Calls "Life-Changing"

Welcome to the first edition of a new series in which we'll cover a variety of affordable basics that we turn to time and time again. We hope that The Basics will help you to build your closet with pieces that you, too, will wear on repeat without doing harm to your bank account. First up, I'm sharing with you the $30 pants that I've been wearing nonstop. 

As you're probably aware, versatile pants for less than $50 are a rare find. So when I find a pair of $30 pants that are versatile, on-trend, and incredibly flattering, I buy them (sometimes in multiples). Yes, while the pants in question are from our collection at Target, the Who What Wear Collection, they are indeed my favorite piece from the entire line (which is saying a lot!). And I'm not alone in that—my fellow editors also have them and are members of the Cropped Flare Pants fan club. The Newly Released Yeezy Boots Are Very Kendall Jenner

The latest collection of Yeezy boots were just released, and you can expect to soon see them on the feet of Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, Emily Ratajkowski, and every other Yeezy-loving It girl who can get her hands on them. Included in the Season 3 lineup are a black over-the-knee version of the popular sock boots and PVC and mesh mid-shin styles. Adele's New Vanity Fair Cover Shoot Is Simply Stunning

Vanity Fair just released its new December 2016 cover, starring Adele, and we're completely obsessed. The photo shoot features the singer in some of the most striking looks we've ever seen her wear, from a red gown billowing in the wind to an embellished tulle dress. (Sidenote: She would look stunning in either of these looks at the Grammys in just a few short months.)

In the accompanying interview, Adele discussed everything from her album writing strategy to her 4-year-old son, but we immediately zeroed in on her wise words about the importance of female mentors in her life. "Every day as I get older, I appreciate women more and more," she told Vanity Fair. "When you're between the ages of 15 and 19, maybe you see women as competition, as opposed to lifesavers and people that hold your hand and have experienced pretty much everything that you have. So the more women in my life the better." Amen to that.

Lily-Rose Depp's First Vogue Cover Is So Good

If you’ve ever had any doubts as to Lily-Rose Depp’s status as the fashion world’s current darling, this should convince you otherwise. It was just revealed that the 17-year-old just landed her first (likely of many) Vogue cover, for the December issue of British Vogue. The actress and model is having a busy fall, with the release of her first Chanel commercial and of her film The Dancer, and her film Planetarium (alongside Natalie Portman) set to release in November. The Top Trends You'll Be Wearing in 4 Months, According to a Buyer

WHO WHAT WEAR: What do you look for on the runway and in market appointments when buying? 

ELYSE WALKER: Something new that the customer doesn’t already have in their wardrobe. We’re always looking to fill gaps in the market and our selection. We look for brands that feel fresh and new … designers have been very safe the past few seasons and customers are looking for what’s next!

WWW: How do you discover emerging brands? 

EW: Our buying teams for both the store and FWRD.com have monthly meetings and everyone is always coming to the table with new lines that they have found. Social media plays a huge factor—it’s a great place to validate new lines that we find in the market.

We’re always looking for the next big brand so we test anything that the team loves. We have a hard rule about picking up new lines—at least one buyer has to completely love it. If we only like it, we don’t try it!

WWW: Do you pick how much of each item to stock?

EW: That’s currently a work in progress, but we analyze the previous season and the current season we are in to see the sell-through and we are constantly checking inventory too.

WWW: What types of items are always surefire sellers? 

EW: Great cashmere, the perfect leather jacket, and anything on a square mid-heel. We use data to guide us but we won’t let it hold us back from placing big bets on products or brands. If the team believes in a product or a trend, we go after it and push it hard on the site. It’s easy to buy into and believe in a new trend, the hard part is when to pull back and move on to the next trend. Our customer is knowledgeable and is always on to the next trend very quickly.

WWW: Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion buyers? 

EW: 1. Work in retail! The customer is our boss. Be a sales associate first because you get firsthand intel as to what the customer wants. 

2. Start from the bottom—you will gain experience that can’t be taught. 

3. Follow your instincts and be decisive —your first choice is almost always the best choice.

4. Network! It’s all about who you know.

The New Cult T-Shirt Brand You're About to See Everywhere

When it comes down to it, there's little else that's as easy-to-wear as a simple T-shirt. But over Fashion Week last month, we spotted that the graphic tee is making a strong comeback. Gone are classic gray tops, and instead, there are T-shirts with bold lettering and prints. For the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund luncheon this week, the model donned a Monse look that featured a white collared blouse draped carefully off one shoulder, like if you unbuttoned a shirt and let it hang loosely off one side. Of course, this particular piece was pre-styled like this on the runway and for her ensemble, but a similar look is easily achievable with any buttoned blouse you might already own.
