15 Classic Pieces French Girls Would Never Toss

Building a wardrobe with a strong collection of classic pieces is a surefire way to always look stylish. No matter what the trends of the moment are, you can draw on staples that will never go out of style. It seems this is something French girls are well-versed in. While they’re not afraid of taking the occasional fashion risk, we’ve noticed that their looks are almost always rooted in timeless pieces and well-cut basics. Curious to know more about the prized items they’ve found over the years, we chatted with French girls to find out the classic pieces they would never toss.

Parisian Sabina Socol told Who What Wear, “Basics are pretty much all I wear every day.” Items like straight-leg jeans and menswear-inspired outerwear are the building blocks of her wardrobe, and it’s no surprise that these are also the pieces she would never get rid of. Similarly, Parysatis Peymani admitted she had an affection for vintage-inspired denim, explaining, “I wear them five days a week, and I would never get rid of them.” But how does this fit into the French take on fashion? Sarah Nait summed it up nicely, telling Who What Wear, “In my opinion, the iconic ‘French style’ can be defined as a capsule wardrobe composed of perfectly tailored clothes and statement pieces that work with your silhouette.”

I Went to Paris to Unpack French Style: This Is What I Learned

Let me hit you with a little tidbit: According to Google, every month, thousands of humans around the globe search “French fashion.” Clearly, people want to about what they’re wearing in the land of wine and cheese. As a fashion editor, I’m well aware of the fascination too, and I wanted to dig deeper. What exactly is French style, and why do we find the concept so enchanting? What does it look like in practice? And most importantly, can this American editor pull it off? To help answer these questions, I quickly decided a trip to Paris during fashion week was necessary (bien sur) and reached out to one of the most influential French brands: Maje.

If you’re not already familiar, Maje is a staple in most French women’s wardrobes. In the chicest Parisian neighborhoods, you can’t go a few blocks without spotting one of its boutiques. Judith Milgrom founded the brand almost 20 years ago—and as I came to learn through speaking with her and wearing her designs, her vision has left an indelible mark on what young, fashionable working women wear in Paris.

This Is the Feature That Makes Cowboy Boots Flattering

Today marked one of the most highly-anticipated collections of the season at Paris Fashion Week: Clare Waight Keller's debut collection for Givenchy. Waight Keller, the former creative director for Chloé, saw much success at that veteran French fashion house, so the industry has been buzzing about what she would do in her new role at Givenchy upon taking the reigns from Riccardo Tisci. Her debut collection, shown this morning, was full of polished, cool-glamorous pieces in a mostly-black, white, and red palette. Many of the looks were paired with a boot style that's been trending for fall: cowboy boots. Except Waight Keller gave hers an ultra-flattering update: a deep V-shaped scallop at boot's shaft. Instead of cutting the legs off just below the knee, it showed a little more skin, which in turn lengthed the appearance of the legs. 

Her debut collection, shown this morning, was full of polished, cool-glam pieces in a mostly-black, white, and red palette. And many of the looks were paired with a boot style that's been trending for fall: cowboy boots, except Waight Keller gave hers an ultra-flattering update: a deep V-shaped scallop at boot's shaft. We fully expect to see this chic, flattering take on the cowboy trend on plenty of fashion girl's feet come spring.
