If you’ve noticed an overwhelming amount of #DenimDay posts on social media today, there’s a very important reason why. For the past 16 years, Peace Over Violence has run the Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Denim Day is a global campaign originally triggered by a ruling in the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because she was wearing skinny jeans. The justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove the jeans, thereby implying consent. In a protest against the ruling, the very next day the women in the Italian Parliament showed up to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
