The Double-Up Rule Fashion People Swear By

There are certain style decrees fashion people rely on to ensure they always look their best. The Clique Theory, anyone? Well, another that I swear by (hey, guys!) is the “Double-Up Rule.”

When you think about your wardrobe, there are undoubtedly a few certain items you cherish above others—perhaps it’s that perfect pair of black ankle boots and the one blazer that fits you flawlessly. So think about it: If you love something so much, you’ll probably be super bummed once that piece eventually wears out.

That’s where the doubling-up idea comes into play. Adore something? Buy two of that item to keep as backup so you’re always armed with your go-to pieces. As I’ve experienced, it’s the simplest way to always love your closet and therefore feel confident in the way you look, knowing you can always reach for your must-haves. (FYI, I tend to double up on my favorite white Stan Smiths and Kenneth Cole shoes so there’s always backup once a pair is beaten into the ground.)

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% on board with the idea of minimizing your closet and only stocking pieces you love in general, but if you really really love something, I personally think it’s totally acceptable to add a few extra items into your offering.

Keep scrolling to learn more about this rule—and shop must-haves totally worthy of doubling up on. Note: The items below highlight the type of picks that could work for doubling up, and there are similar finds out there no matter your budget.
