Is the Accessory You Loved As a 9-Year-Old Officially Cool Now?

Much like scrunchies, jelly shoes, and bucket hats, fanny packs are one of those quintessential nostalgic trends that fashion likes to declare "in again" every few seasons or so—though whether they actually stick around is another story all together.

In the past, I've been hesitant to try them—not so much because I was worried about looking like a dorky dad (though the thought did cross my mind), but because I didn't think I'd want to give up my beloved crossbody bags in favor of carrying my worldly possessions around on my waist. Sure, they were great for toting magic markers around in grade school, but could they really be all that practical for an adult (especially one with a habit of keeping seven lip balm options on her person at all times)?

Well, all it took was a trip to Zara and this black pull-tab belt bag (a much chicer name for the style than "fanny pack," I've gotta say) for me to finally want to find out. Since taking it home, I've worn it out vintage shopping and relished the hands-free freedom it granted me; I've worn it to work and appreciated not having to rummage through a giant tote for my Metrocard. On the train, I'm way less concerned with someone sneakily stealing something from my bag (they would have to be very sneaky with it attached to my waist).

In short, I'm a convert. And now I'm mulling an upgrade to one of the many designer options out there right now, from Alexander Wang's rose-printed padlock pouch to Stella McCartney's storage-laden faux-leather belt.

Below, shop 15 fanny packs that'll make you reconsider your go-to summer bag.

Are Colored Jeans a Thing Again? Asking for a Friend

I know that the saying "asking for a friend" typically insinuates that you are in fact asking for yourself, but I can assure you that this time, I actually am asking for a friend. And by ask, I mean I decided to inquire into whether or not colored jeans are making their triumphant return. The other day, said friend seriously asked whether or not colored jeans are trending because she had seen a few online at her go-to retailers. To be honest, I laughed a little at the question. As I quickly reminisced on the mint-colored skinny jeans I proudly strutted in high school, I started to wonder, wait...should I have kept those? And thus began my inquiry into the very pressing matter.

Much (and I mean much) to my surprise, I discovered that retailers and designers from Zara to Rachel Comey to Simon Miller all currently have multiple pairs of colored jeans out in the marketplace. I even came across an Acne Studios pair which was followed by several deep breaths of reluctant yet kind of excited acceptance. Am I ready for their return? Are you? The good news is, you don't have to decide right this second, but in case you are curious, I rounded up the best colored jeans, period, for you to shop. Now, if you are already a huge fan of colored jeans, I don't want my dramatized shock of the resurrected trend to imply that it's not stylish. Clearly, that is not the case, I just personally am shocked. Not upset, not not on board—simply surprised. Can you blame me?

Dear friend who asked if colored jeans are a thing again,

They are.

Best, Lauren.

Here's the Most Laid-Back Way to Wear Leggings (if You're Not Going to the Gym)

Despite the ease with which Dakota Johnson navigates high fashion when the occasion calls for it, the actress isn't one to shy away from leggings for everything else. The sportswear staple has become one of Johnson's off-duty go-tos and she's served up a long list of stylings for varying degrees of comfort. From errand ensembles pairs with Gucci slides to chill brunch looks, Johnson doesn't discriminate when it comes to working leggings into an outfit.

Most recently, Johnson demonstrated the most laid-back way to wear leggings (if you aren't going to the gym), pairing her Lululemon pair with a plain white T-shirt and a flannel tied around her waist. Perfectly equipped to tackle transitional weather, Johnson finished off the weekend look with Adidas sneakers and oversize shades.

It's Official: This Will Be Your Go-To Outfit for Summer

Wearing sneakers with a dress is nothing new yet somehow the playful juxtaposition never fails to make a statement. Whether you're pairing a springtime number with a clean white canvas pair or pushing the envelope with a sportier version, a dress with sneakers never gets old (and your feet thank you every time you try out the look).

Over the weekend we were seeing double when both Emma Roberts and Diane Kruger stepped out in similar ensembles—light green airy summer dresses finished off with classic Chuck Taylors. The timeless converse gave a tasteful dose of punk to their otherwise ladylike ensembles. The results were everything we're envisioning for our summer wardrobes.

These Anti-Legging Trousers Have a Cult Following

It's been over a decade since Jesse Kamm Sailor Pants made their debut, and unlike most fashion items that have been around for 12 years and counting, they're still as popular as ever (and as prone to selling out as ever). These high-waisted, cropped, wide-leg pants (i.e. the opposite of leggings) gained a cult following from the start, thanks to their figure-flattering powers and their appropriateness for all seasons. The thick canvas fabric will keep you warm in the cooler months, and you'll keep cool in the warmer months as their wide enough for air to flow against your skin. Los Angeles- based Kamm summed up their popularity best in an interview with Need Supply, saying  "The Sailor Pant looks so great on so many different body types, and they are so damn comfortable, they are hard not to love."

Something that we love about the pants that fashion girls go crazy for is that you can wear them to work, on the weekends, and with practically any type of shoe. While their $395 price tag is certainly a splurge, they're well made enough to last you for years and years While we're partial to the Street hue for spring (a light on-trend khaki), the Sailor Pants come in a variety of wearable colors, and even a new chambray style. We'd gladly take any one of them and wear them on repeat. Want to see how we recommend styling them for work?

The Jewelry Trends Fashion Girls Can't Stop Buying (and Selling)

Is it just me, or do people not talk about jewelry enough? This, I feel, is a massive shame. After all, a pair of statement earrings or a subtle and delicate necklace can be the piece that pulls your whole look together. So I have decided to not just talk about it, but also to investigate it. To really get the inside scoop on what is happening in the jewelry world, I wanted to explore a market that normally isn't talked about—the resale market. One of the most well-curated resale sites in the industry, The RealReal, was kind enough to gather their team of certified gemologists to speak on the spring jewelry trends they have noticed all over the resale world.

What they came back with was actually quite surprising, but proves that the consumer doesn't always follow the runway styles as much as we think they do. While trends like statement earrings are undoubtedly having a moment, others they listed such as brooches and ear cuffs came as more of a shock, as they were mildly put to rest a few seasons ago. The experts at The RealReal also told us the trends people are not buying which include edgy or spiky jewelry and colorful bangles. However, in terms of what is trending, after sifting through The RealReal for must-have items for you all to shop, it was clear to see why resale customers cling to the spring trends they do, and we have a feeling you'll be just as fond.

Go on to read about the 5 biggest resale trends, according to the certified gemologists at The RealReal.

This Is the 2017 Way to Do Monochrome Dressing

Monochrome dressing is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Whether you want an effortless way to instantly pull an outfit together or simply what to take your pieces to the next level with a polished finish, coordinating pieces in similar shades of the same color automatically elevates any look.

Fashion girls are big proponents of the strategy, working head-to-toe looks in a uniform hue time and time again. Recently, celebrities have been testing out a definitively laid-back approach to monochrome dressing, subbing in light-washed denim to complement nearly identical shades of blue jean blue. Bella Hadid is the latest to demonstrate this new wave of monochrome dressing, stepping out in a light blue off-the-shoulder top paired with a coordinating denim jacket and high-waisted jeans. Even her handbag was a matching shade, making an otherwise casual look a fashion-forward statement.

Emma Roberts Mixed Three Unlikely Prints—and It Totally Worked

One of the things we love most about Emma Roberts is her penchant for taking fashion risks and the fact that she nails every adventurous look she tries makes her one of our favorite muses. The actress and bookworm was up to her usual tricks when she stepped out in a Coach 1941 look from the brand's F/W 17 collection, which included not one but three different patterns.

The trick to pulling off the unlikely prints together? Keeping the palette of each piece—in this case, her dress, jacket, and bag—within the same color family. Consequently, the combination of the print-mixing and the head-to-toe monochrome makes these two looks, which are tricky individually, actually complement one another. This, in addition to carefully considering the cumulative effect of the prints, all play into a neo-Victorian, modern prairie vibe that we're dying to copy this season—and well into fall.

Fashion Insiders Told Us Which Weekender Bags Are the Best

It's that time of year again: the weather is warming up enough to have us itching for summer Fridays, and we're scrambling to get some weekend trips on the books so we have something to look forward to once Memorial Day finally rolls around. (After all, the anticipation is half the fun, don't you think?)

Once your AirBnb is booked and your travel plans are arranged, the only thing left to think about is what to pack. Rather than lugging around a full-size suitcase, or stuffing your clothes into half a dozen canvas tote bags—both of which I admit I've been guilty of in the past—finding a practical, roomy-enough weekender bag is a move you won't regret.

And because we're all about getting a second (and sometimes sixth) opinion, we asked some of the most well-traveled fashion industry folks we know for their favorite luggage picks for shorter trips.

So whether you're taking off on a Kardashian-style girls' trip or just getting out of the city for a day or two, read on for tips on where to buy a bag that'll get you there in style.

D.C. Fashion in 5 Easy Pieces

In the age of Instagram, fashion has become less about location. Once an outfit is posted, we can immediately see what someone is wearing everywhere from NYC to Tokyo to Sydney. Even though we can spot outfits across the globe in an instant, there are still specific trends linked to certain cities. After all, some climates are suited to year round bikinis while others require layers at all times. And the social norms weigh in too—in some places like L.A., denim is appropriate for almost any occasion, while other spots require a dressier approach.

Curious to find out about what defines D.C. fashion, we tapped blogger Sara Azani of Style MBA. She splits her time between D.C., NYC, and L.A. so has her finger on the pulse of what stands out in each city.

Here, Sara shares her take on style in D.C.: “Fashion in D.C. has certainly evolved and Michelle Obama can be credited for putting a focus on fashion during her tenure as First Lady. And now more than ever, it’s acceptable for professional women to experiment with fashion and express themselves through their clothes. There’s now a subset of girls in D.C. who love all things fashion and can usually be seen sporting the latest CĂ©line bag or AlaĂŻa belt. D.C. is still a town that likes to dress up and with summer approaching, you can usually find the fashionable wearing flowy dresses paired with a great bag and neutral accessories. Between work, a new restaurant opening, or book party, D.C. girls have busy social calendars so they tend to gravitate towards pieces that can easily transition from day to night. Even if she doesn’t want to go out, her new Gucci bag does!”

Opening Ceremony's Bringing Back the Brand You Wore 20 Years Ago

Some of us may cringe when we think about what the so-called “cool kids” wore when we were still young enough to worry about homeroom attendance or PSAT scores. But for the past several months Opening Ceremony has been helping to reintroduce one It brand cool kids (all kids, really) everywhere wore, Esprit, back into our lives. And upon closer inspection, you might agree that the label feels as relevant as ever.

Esprit is recognizable instantly, whether it’s the obvious logo or the impactful prints. And like Opening Ceremony’s cofounder Carol Lim, there might be some fond high school memories attached, too. “My favorite was a two-piece,” she tells us of her own past. “It was a button-down shirt and a capri pant in a woven material. It was fuchsia, had cherry prints all over it, and I just loved it.”

While you technically haven’t been able to find an Esprit store in the U.S. since 2012, its resurgence is now at Lim’s and co-founder Humberto Leon’s own groundbreaking shopping destination. The team debuted the first collection in the fall and have launched the second iteration this week. There are no cherries this time, however, the new Esprit offerings still feature bold and colorful prints—florals and stripes mostly—in effortless head-to-toe combinations that can be worn as a complete outfit or blended with your existing go-to wardrobe.

Lim says she hopes shoppers are instantly pulled by the aesthetics, but it’s Esprit’s story that’s the true point of attraction. “It really was a pivotal brand in fashion history. It was started by this couple, who also started The North Face,” Lim tells us about Susie Tompkins Buell and the late Douglas Tompkins. “They were one of the first to think about sustainability; the whole ethos of the brand is around how do you have supportive relationships with your manufacturers. They wanted to take care of the earth. They were global citizens of the world.”

Anyone who owned a fashion magazine in the ’90s will understand Lim’s last point. You may also remember how Esprit most notably cast non-models for its campaigns, a daring move in the ’80s and ’90s. “That definitely spoke to Humbert and me,” Lim tells us while among the racks of new designs available in stores and online now. “I think people want to be attached to a brand that’s supportive of all types of people. It makes me want the clothing even more.”

Scroll down for a look at the OC’s own Esprit campaign, featuring Coco Gordon Moore, Arsun Sorrenti, and other individuals who inspired Lim and Leon. Then shop some favorites from the old-school brand.

What the Sex and the City Wedding Would Have Cost in Real Life

It's been eight years since the first Sex and the City movie came out. Can you believe it? That means it's been almost a decade since Carrie Bradshaw's dream wedding to Mr. Big famously went awry.

As InStyle reported, Ebates did the math and calculated how much iconic movie weddings would have cost in real life. As for Bradshaw's nuptials, Ebates estimated the figure to be a staggering $229,869. The company factored in prices of the ceremony, reception, attire, wedding rings, gifts, and miscellaneous expenses to come up with the number. You may remember that Bradshaw's over-the-top dress was Vivienne Westwood—Ebates estimated that her gown and Mr. Big's suit alone would have totaled $27,390. Impressive, right?

Watch the video below to see how much other movie weddings would cost, and keep scrolling to shop unique dresses for yourself.

This Is What Angelina Jolie Wears to Shop at Target

Angelina Jolie manages to look chic wherever she goes—even on a shopping trip to Target. Spotted with daughter Shiloh, Jolie wore her signature outfit: head-to-toe black. She opted for a dark coat, maxi dress, and ankle boots, rounding out the look with a pair of aviator sunglasses and Tom Ford's T-Clasp Tara Bag ($1990). It's safe to say we don't look this stylish on our Target runs, but we're officially inspired to step up our game.

Of course, this isn't the only enviable look Jolie has stepped out in recently. She made a $125 skirt look high-end at the airport and also recently wore one of the biggest accessory trends of the season. Excuse us while we go copy all of her outfits.

Is This Sneaker Faux Pas Officially Cool Now?

Wearing sneakers with dresses is obviously a thing these days, especially in the warmer months. You've probably seen the look on street style stars, celebs, and bloggers, and even worn it yourself. But typically, the sneakers that fashion girls pair with dresses are more of the old-school, or "retro" variety, as opposed to athletic sneakers, which are usually paired with leggings and denim, or reserved for the gym. Pairing them with dresses or skirts was formerly considered a sneaker "faux pas". But the sartorial risk-taking It girl Hailey Baldwin may have just proven that athletic sneakers are more versatile than you think.

We've certainly seen examples of the street style set thinking outside the box when it comes to styling athletic sneakers, but Baldwin's pairing of sporty Adidas sneakers with an off-the-shoulder mini dress this week in Los Angeles was a fresh look for someone in the celebrity set. The combination of the summery dress and white athletic sneakers felt effortless and just different enough to turn heads (in a good way). We, for one, plan on trying out this easy summer outfit soon, thanks to Baldwin's inspiring sneaker choice. Want to join us?

Kendall Jenner Has the Louis Vuitton Backpack We Wanted in High School

Kendall Jenner has a penchant for sporting bygone handbag styles–everything that’s old in fashion is eventually new again, right? But specifically, the model has recently been reminding us of all the styles we once coveted (or perhaps owned) in the ’90s and early aughts. Last week it was the Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Multicolore bag, but she’s also been continuously sporting a mini logo backpack that ignites so much nostalgia.

Opting for a Louis Vuitton style once again, the Monogram Montsouris MM Backpack, Jenner added the throwback piece to a typical KJ outfit of leggings, a cropped T-shirt, and slides. Instantly the style reminded us of the ubiquitous mini backpack trend that dominated the ’90s (and made a return to the mainstream a couple years ago), as well as the designer-logo backpack craze of the aughts (which also included Coach and Prada styles, if you recall).

Take a look below at how Jenner’s helping to keep the trend alive.

When Bella Hadid was walking around New York City yesterday, her cropped sweatshirt made us look twice. Hadid does not shy away from wearing unusual clothes (she just wore a jacket made of pants), and her latest outfit definitely proves that.

Hadid wore a cropped white sweatshirt held together by white shoelaces. The intricate lacing covered both of her arms, while her midriff was left completely bare. She paired the sweatshirt with white cargo pants, a white lace bralette, white sneakers, and Roberi & Fraud '90s circular sunglasses.

It's a lot of look to pull off, but when you're a Victoria's Secret model like Hadid, it looks nothing short of effortless.

Check out Bella Hadid's all-white ensemble below, and don't miss her cool lace-up sleeves.

Wouldn't Emma Watson's Gorgeous White Gown Be Perfect for a Wedding?

Emma Watson is already known for her regal (and sustainable) red carpet looks, but she really outdid herself this week. Watson attended a screening of her new movie The Circle in New York City, and she looked positively bridal.

She wore a white Burberry off-the-shoulder gown that mirrors this season's bridal trends to a T. As a champion of eco-conscious style, Watson made sure her look followed suit. The dress was crafted from 100% Global Organic Textile Standard–certified, Italian-woven silk (that's a mouthful).

Off-the-shoulder wedding gowns are one of the biggest bridal trends of 2017, so it's no surprise to see this gown in the spotlight, even if it's being worn on a red carpet instead of down the aisle.

Take a look at Emma Watson's Burberry dress below to see it for yourself.

ASOS Sells 88 Pairs of These Under-$50 Skinny Jeans Every Day

Last year, ASOS sold 2.7 million pairs of jeans—which, to put things in perspective, is equal to the population of Chicago. But while the e-commerce giant currently has 900 styles to choose from online, one, in particular, keeps selling out.

According to ASOS, the Ridley High-Waist Skinny Jean is the most popular style on the site, and last year alone they sold 32,000 pairs. Part of this comes down to the sheer variety of washes and fits: right now, there are 84 versions available, including those from the retailer's Curve, Tall, Petite, and Maternity ranges. There are pairs with blown-out knees, shredded hems, or no distressing at all. Some have on-trend details like ruffle trim or buckles—but be warned, these tend to sell fast. You can even save 16% and buy a two-pack—though even at full price, they come in at less than $50 per pair. (No wonder fans can't stop collecting.)

So tell us: do you have a pair? If not, keep scrolling to shop the best-selling jeans at ASOS—and find out the site's five most popular trends this season here.

Now You Know: You Actually Only Need One Type of Underwear

Is it just us, or is figuring out the best type of underwear to put on under every type of clothing exhausting? The thought of never having to think about what underwear to buy again may seem like a pipe dream, but there's no sartorial challenge too big for us—which is why we called in an expert in the lingerie department to provide a little guidance.

Michelle Wahler is the CEO and founder of ultra-popular intimate apparel e-tailer True&Co. People rave about its perfect-fitting bras and comfortable yet flattering, pretty underwear. Given the dozens of intimates that True&Co. makes, we couldn't think of a better person to tell us the one type of underwear that you actually need.

When we asked Wahler about the one type of underwear that suits every outfit and occasion, she told us it's the brand's True Body Hipster: "It's super flat with no VPL, it's super smooth and comfortable against your skin, and [it's made of] the same 'naked but better' fabric as our best-selling True Body bras but is substantial enough (i.e., not flimsy), so it doesn't twist on your body or in the wash." The style is so popular, in fact, that True&Co. sold twice as many hipsters as it did thongs last year.

Now that you have the underwear-shopping knowledge you were in search of, shop True & Co.'s best seller below, along with more seamless nude hipsters!

Gigi Hadid Just Wore the 2017 Version of Skinny Jeans and Ballet Pumps

Trust Gigi Hadid to take one of the most established outfit combinations of the past few decades and enliven it to the highest degree. Who knew that we'd take so much interest right now in a pair of skinny jeans and some ballet pumps? But here we are, truly inspired on a Monday morning to fall back upon those trusty pieces and allow them to be updated into 2017 territory.

Of course, like any perfect Gigi-related getup, there are small tweaks that ensure its greatness. The skinny jeans are no ordinary skinny jeans, but rather the reworked, higher-waisted, true-blue, raw-hem kind of skinny jeans that you've probably adopted over the past year. And then the ballet pumps: This simple naughties-adored shoe style has been amped up for flat shoe–loving girls of the modern age with extra detailing, polished pointed toes, slingbacks, lace-up ties, and decadent fabrications.

You name it, there's a pair of ballet pumps that lives up to it. To add further sophistication to a supposedly "basic" outfit, the model flung on a tailored long green military-style coat and added some reflective sunnies (what else?) and a white leather bag.

That's a Very Different Way to Wear a Suit, Selena Gomez

Do you own a gingham-print piece yet? Chances are you do. Greater chances are you’ve already seen it spotted everywhere, be it splashed across accessories, on go-to warm-weather dresses, perhaps on a French style star, and definitely at Zara. But Selena Gomez is serving up this popular look in a way that caught our attention.

Dressed in a design from one of the most talented up-and-coming labels, Brock Collection, Gomez sported an off-the-shoulder suit in a pale blue shade. The look was tailored yet playful with its flirty silhouette and seasonal print. Plus the singer/actress/TV producer added one more trend to the mix by wearing matching blue heels, creating an unexpected preppy-polished look from head to toe.

Keep reading to see how she made it all come together.

We Can't Concentrate Right Now: Olivia Palermo's Jeans Are Too Good

When you have 4 million Instagram followers, a simple skinny jean outfit might not cut it. Olivia Palermo decided to post a photo of her latest denim look, and her blues are anything but ordinary. Her SJYP Steve J & Yoni P Frayed Mid-Rise Flared Jeans ($310) boast not one, not two, but three different major trends right now: a cropped flare silhouette, front slits, and fringe detail. In other words, they might be the most on-trend jeans you can get right now.

We love how Palermo chose pared-down pieces to round out her look: Her simple camel sweater and black pumps didn't distract from her amazing jeans, allowing them to take center stage (where they rightly belong).

Confirmed: Leggings Don't Look Good With These Boots

There is no denying that leggings have become a streetwear staple to the wardrobes of nearly every It girl in existence. Remember the great debate of whether or not leggings were pants? Well, that's been put to rest, as celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner not only wear them on the regular, but they style them in ways unthinkable. In case you weren't aware, Gigi and Kendall have the same stylist, Monica Rose, and during a three-day trip hosted by Reebok, I had the opportunity to interview the genius herself.

Curious to pick her brain on all things legging- and sneaker-related, I first asked Monica what the best sneakers to wear with leggings are. She said, "I think a [Reebok] classic leather is good to wear. I just think it's such a comfortable shoe. When I wear them, I'm excited for work and excited to be comfortable. But for leggings, I think any sneaker really goes with them, like a pair of Vans or Nikes." If you aren't familiar with the Classic Leather sneakers Monica speaks so highly of, don't worry, we shopped out the best colors below.

In addition to the best sneakers to wear with leggings, I asked Monica what the one item was she would never style with leggings. Without hesitation, she clearly stated to consider leaving your thigh-high boots at home. If Monica Rose, the mastermind behind some of the most memorable looks in fashion right now, says she would never put thigh-high boots with leggings, that means Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, and the whole Kardashian clan (just to name a few) won't be wearing that boot style with leggings anytime soon.

Go on to shop the sneakers Monica Rose says look the best with leggings, including the Reebok Classic Leather style.

This Is What Anna Wintour Wore To The Met Gala Nearly 30 Years Ago

The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual gala benefit, or more commonly known as The Met Gala, is not just the most extravagant and exclusive fashion event of the year; it’s the work of Anna Wintour. While the biggest role on her resume may read editor-in-chief of Vogue, Wintour first host the Gala back in 1995. And later in 2014, after helping secure approximately $125 million for the institution, The Met named the wing after her, now known as the Anna Wintour Costume Center. So what does The Met Gala’s biggest fan and supporter wear? Well, it’s changed over the last 30 years. A lot.

In preparation for Monday’s red carpet, we tracked down some of the very best Wintour looks from galas past, all the way to 1988, the year she took the helm at Vogue in the U.S. And naturally, we caught onto a few themes. Firstly, Wintour’s looks always have a subtle nod to the theme but never quite boarder on “costume”-y; she has a penchant for statement, fuzzy accents; and when it comes to designers, there’s one that usually weighs out all others. You won't be able to miss it.

Take a look at a bit of fashion history ahead, and see some of the best Met Gala looks from its most devoted attendee.
