Hear Us Out: You Don't Need to Be Afraid of Wearing Color

There’s no doubt about it… Bold colors are having a moment. Fashion girls are taking pieces with eye-catching colors and creating some pretty compelling outfits. Perhaps it’s foreshadowing for what’s to come in the next few months: In case you hadn’t heard, one of fall’s biggest trends is set to be red. Red boots, red dresses, head-to-toe red—get ready.

But sometimes colorful outfits are tricky to style, making it hard to hop on board. Even this editor is guilty. It’s so easy to fall into a habit of wearing black or navy or white. But with one scroll through Instagram, I’ve been inspired to start incorporating more daring colors into my wardrobe. Through trial and error, and a little research to see how fashion girls have mastered the tricky trend, I’ve figured out that there’s a simple trick to wearing bold colors. And it’s pretty easy to follow: When wearing bold shades, stick to solids, and make sure to color-block. That’s it! If you need more proof, see some outfit inspiration ahead.

Keep reading to see how fashion girls are color-blocking; then shop our favorite bold styles.

Happy summer, everyone! And happy birthday to all of the Cancers out there. This month, we find ourselves with the sun in Cancer and moon in Libra on the first of the month. Cancer is all about nesting, chilling out, and self-nurturance. Cancer is also a boss babe, so she asks us to tap into our internal reserve of getting stuff done (perhaps mainly around the homestead or if you work at home). With the month beginning with the moon in Libra, emotional balance can be a major keystone for July. We may be challenged this month to keep our center even as things feel really busy and intense.

Try This Easy Off-Duty Outfit Formula All Summer Long

Truth: We wear our denim cutoffs to death in the summertime. For a range of off-duty occasions, it seems there's nothing they don't pair perfectly with. So here to help us avoid total fatigue is the heroic sister to denim shorts: a jean skirt.

Essentially the same wear-with-anything item sans one strip of fabric down the middle, a skirt imparts a similar effect with a slightly different silhouette. An A-line denim piece can add a subtle but impactful vintage-inspired look to crop tops, tanks, and—as seen on Bella Hadid—basic bodysuits. We love the model's take on double-duty denim, pairing her high-waisted skirt with a cropped, oversize jacket, and her sleek satin mules and silver accessories add interest to an otherwise pared-down outfit. Looking to ever so slightly update your denim game this summer? Add this approach into the rotation.

This New Brand Was Made for Italian Vacations

Whether you're going on vacation or not, the new brand, Ciao Lucia, is one to know. Created for the girl who wishes she was on an eternal vacation, Ciao Lucia's collection contains the only pieces you would ever need to take on a relaxing getaway. But not just any getaway, one to the Italian coast, of course. Designer Lucy Akin's inspiration for an Italian-inspired brand came about because, as the site tells us, "when she was little, Italian graphic design became one of her passions – she collected vintage postcards from Italy and all the old liquor posters for Contreau and Martini. The Talented Mr Ripley was her favorite movie and she worked at a Sicilian restaurant on the water of San Francisco all through high school and college."

Each piece from the swimsuits down to the going-out tops was created with a story behind it, as told by the picture-perfect locations each item was shot in. We hate to break it to you, but Ciao Lucia will definitely give you a travel itch, but at least now you know what to buy before you go. Because let's face it—your next adventure is imminent.

Look Closely: Bella Hadid and Lily Aldridge Had the Chicest Twinning Moment

But if you look closely, you'll see their twinning moment: They both wore beautiful choker necklaces with colorful gems. The statement pieces are from Bulgari's new Festa High Jewelry collection, which the brand describes as "an homage to the sense of pure happiness of the Italian Festas."

Fêting the collection's launch in Venice, Italy last night—at a historic palace, naturally—Hadid and Aldridge looked nothing short of glamorous. How can they possible top these outfits at future events?

A French Icon Told Gigi Hadid to Wear This Easy Outfit to Parties

Because she's Gigi Hadid, Gigi Hadid goes to a lot of parties. So it makes sense that she recently told Harper's Bazaar UK that the best piece of fashion advice she's ever received was from Carine Roitfeld, the former editor in chief of Vogue Paris, current editor in chief of CR Fashion Book, and global fashion director of Harper's Bazaar. She once told the It model, "If you don't know what to wear to a party, wear jeans, a T-shirt, and heels, [and] call it a night." Hadid has clearly followed the iconic 62-year-old Parisian's advice, as she added, "It's made a lot of my nights easier." We're in complete agreement that unless you're attending a formal affair, you can't go wrong with the easy, effortless combination.

These Are the Summer Trends Miami Fashion Girls Can't Stop Buying

If there's anyone who understands warm-weather style, it's Miami girls—and if there's anyone who understands Miami girls, it's Laure Hériard Dubreuil, founder and president of The Webster, the It boutique that's been at the heart of the city's fashion scene since it was founded in 2009. While the store now has locations in Houston, Costa Mesa, Bal Harbour, and soon New York, the South Beach flagship started it all, and locals and visitors alike flock to its racks for trendsetting wares from established designers and up-and-comers alike (perhaps it's no surprise that the logo is a pink flamingo).

With the hottest days of summer fast approaching, we're more eager than ever to tap into the style secrets of a group that doesn't revert to a uniform of denim cutoffs and T-shirts as soon as the temperature hits 80 degrees, but rather embraces color, glamour, and femininity all year round, so we asked Hériard Dubreuil to fill us in on what pieces her customers are enamored with this season.

Nike Is Bringing Back the '90s Sneakers That "Changed the Game"

The '90s are officially here to stay. First, Steve Madden brought back its cult slides from the decade, and now Nike is resurrecting a classic '90s sneaker style: the Air Shake Ndestrukt ($140). Launching on Saturday, July 1, the unique shoes feature lacing on the sides rather than down the middle—how inventive is that?

The product description explains them best: "Back in the heyday of the 90s, the Air Shake Ndestrukt changed the game with its bold look and unique lacing set up. Now the tough-as-nails silhouette and blacktop-hungry outsole is back in a pristine white mono colorway." Are these shoes on your short list?

Millennials Are Buying This Style of Engagement Ring

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of engagement ring options? Us too. So sometimes it's nice to sort to the essentials. If you're curious what people are actually buying right now, we have an answer. Bloomberg tapped experts to share their findings of what millennials, in particular, are looking for, and the answer might surprise you (or not): They're nixing mass-market brands in favor of vintage and custom rings.

"We're seeing millennials want something that no one else has," Casey Sullivan, co-founder of jewelry e-consigner Gleem & Co, told Bloomberg. "They want something different that they identify with."

Bloomberg also tapped Kieron Hodgson, an analyst at Panmure Gordon & Co., who told the website why conventional diamonds are being replaced by vintage or custom versions. "The generation that doesn't want to show up to a party wearing the same dress as anyone else also wants to put on a different ring," he explained. Are you in the same boat?

Head over to Bloomberg to learn about the rest of the fascinating findings, and scroll down to shop our favorite vintage-inspired engagement rings.

Just Like That, Zendaya Made Us Forget About Millennial Pink

All trends must come to an end (don’t worry, guys—they’re cyclical), and in the case of Millennial Pink, we’ve been starting to feel as though another shade is creeping ever so subtly in that direction. Then we saw this look from Zendaya at the Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere.

The actress, designer, and all-around intrepid style star wore a bright pink Ralph & Russo dress that reminded us of the familiar hue of Barbie-doll pink we’ve also recently spotted on Bella Hadid, Elle Fanning, and Hailey Baldwin. However, Zendaya’s elegant dress with a bold, high-cut slit and long, flowing train certainly is the most unforgettable bright-pink look this year.

We’re not claiming that the currently ubiquitous, lighter, more powdery, less saccharine shade of pink is going away right now, but let’s just say we weren't exactly missing it at this major red carpet event.

Kate Middleton Just Brought Back These Shoes From 2011

What's your favorite part of Kate Middleton's wardrobe? Of course, her collection of ladylike dresses is beyond enviable, but we would give anything to raid her shoe closet in particular. As you probably know, she's a major proponent of re-wearing shoes, including her go-to Superga sneakers and her beloved nude pumps. Now, she's bringing back another favorite—all the way from 2011.

Attending an event at the Victoria & Albert Museum today, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a Gucci Grosgrain-Trimmed Cotton-Blend Tweed Mini Dress ($2890), which has already sold out, along with pumps from her go-to brand, L.K. Bennett. She first wore the classic shoes back in 2011 at an event in Darwen, England. Six years ago, she paired the shoes with a sophisticated navy suit. Which of the two outfits is more your style?

Wear Your Summer Midi Skirt the Rachel Bilson Way

Although we'll never truly tire of denim, summer is our golden opportunity to bust out all manner of skirts and dresses as alternatives. Breezy and versatile in warm weather, a midi-length silhouette can be styled myriad ways for day and evening occasions. A recent look of the sort that's left us utterly inspired is Rachel Bilson's 3.1 Phillip Lim ensemble, styled with eye-catching metallic accessories.

While black might not be the natural "summer color," the actress brightens things up with a nautical-inspired sweater tank and glimmering, sky-high Louboutin pumps. The sparkle factor doesn't stop there—further playing up her silver shoes are dangly earrings, which catch the light just right. A tousled topknot and classic Ray-Bans cement the look as a fashion-forward choice for the season—and one we'll be copying ASAP.

Love Color and Print? This Inclusive Collection Will Make Your Day

It was back in January when Tanya Taylor—a designer who makes prints and florals so irresistible even NYC girls willingly trade in their all-black ensembles for them—teamed with SNL’s Aidy Bryant to create a dress for her Late Night With Seth Meyers appearance. Sure, the event was met with celebration because, if we’re being frank, the market for women’s fashion above a size 12 still leaves much to be desired. And now, Taylor is making a full commitment to help fill that gap.

Today, the designer has announced that the brand’s extending its sizes—up to a 22—going forward. To kick it off, she’s debuted a capsule collection of some of her signature pieces in new sizes that make her designs available for those, say, who aren’t celebrities.

“Collaborating with Aidy Bryant and Glamour magazine in January on a red carpet look opened my eyes to a market that is missing feminine, flattering, and optimistic clothing,” Taylor says in a press release. “Aidy and I are the same age, share a similar joyful approach to life and love color and print yet we have access to different clothing. I personally wanted to change that. We are an inclusive brand defined by a point of view not a range of sizes.”

Shop some of the debut styles in Taylor’s broader range of sizes. And keep an eye out—there’ll be more to come.

This Controversial Denim Trend Will Replace Skinny Jeans

The Short:

  • With the rise of repurposed vintage jeans, rigid styles are gaining momentum
  • The 100% denim designs are stiff (read: not as comfortable as stretchy skinnies), but have a certain caché
  • Rigid styles have an especially high sell-through rate at major retailers

The Long:

Hide your skinny jeans, there's a new dominating denim trend in town. After years of holding the spot of the favorite child, there's a new style on the rise (or the re-rise, depending on how you look at it). Rigid denim is back challenging your skinny jeans sacred status. The 100% cotton styles have seen a major rise in popular, with a sell rate of over 80% according to The Wall Street Journal

We've seen brands like Re/Done and Vetements reworking the high-rise styles of the '80s and '90s, but major denim brands are also creating new takes on the stiff style. And while skinny jeans will always win in the comfort department, rigid jeans offer a certain cool-factor that It-girls are craving right now (just scan your favorite fashion Instagrams and you'll see just what we mean)

Read on to shop a few of our favorite rigid jeans now!

Puma's New Rose-Gold Sneakers Are Ridiculously Pretty

Thanks to its slew of celebrity fans (including Cara Delevingne, Kylie Jenner, Margot Robbie, and Sofia Richie) and Rihanna's wildly popular Fenty line, everyone seems to be wearing Pumas right now. But the number one reason they're so popular, in our opinion, is because the brand just keeps designing cool shoes that fashion girls love wearing with everything from leggings to dresses. And one of its newest releases is sure to please sneakerheads and fashion girls alike: rose-gold platform sneakers.

Puma just updated its popular Basket style in both white and black with rose-gold toe-caps and blush-colored logo, along with a white pair with a metallic lilac toe-cap. The sneakers are perfect for someone who loves rose gold but is seeking something a little more subtle than a pair of all-rose-gold shoes. The $100 sneakers are set to launch at Puma on Saturday, July 1, but we did a little detective work and found that the black with rose gold and white with metallic options are already available via Saks. Bonus: Thanks to their platform sole, these sneakers will make you look taller.

Read on to shop the pretty new Pumas before everyone else does.

This Model's New Engagement/Wedding Ring Combo Is So Perfect

These Leggings Sold 10,000 Pairs In a Single Day

Leggings are undoubtedly the closet staple everyone needs in their closet. So naturally, when we first heard buzz free pair back in January, there was no way we could pass that up.

Girlfriend Collective, a fairly new eco-friendly start-up, was the brand behind the viral leggings. It seems we weren't the only ones who got a heads up about the promotion. On the first day alone, founder Ellie Dinh and her husband Quang told Refinery 29 they reached a total of 10,000 orders and that was just the beginning.

The brand is officially back and better than ever. On top of its initial mission to create a pair of leggings from 25 recycled plastic water bottles, they're expanding their collection to include even more affordable styles. You can now purchase the original high and mid-rise leggings on the company's new website, which range from $58-$68. In addition, two bras known as The Paloma and The Topanga were released both retailing for $38.

“We wanted our price points to be accessible for as many people as possible, because we know that one of the difficulties with high-quality activewear is the astronomical price tag," Dinh told Refiney 29. "We believed we could give the highest quality with socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing without the expensive prices. And hey, we can!”

For now you can pre-order the looks in three colors: Powder Blue, Black, and Ivory. Items are limited and we have a feeling these are definitely going to sell out. Check out our favorites below, you better grab one for yourself before there isn't anything left.

So This Is the Biggest Maxi Dress Styling Mistake

Maxi dresses are one of those pieces that reemerges every summer without fail. As soon as the days start getting longer, so do the dresses. They will simply never not be a thing. Despite this, it's not the easiest of dress styles to wear. Certain maxi dresses are decidedly more flattering than others and certain pieces and shoe style are decidedly more successful than others when paired with maxi dresses.

Curious as to what the single biggest maxi dress styling mistake is, we reached out to someone who would definitely have an answer: Cristina Ehrlich, whose wildly-impressive client list includes Priyanka Chopra, Allison Williams, Anna Kendrick, and Alison Brie. So what's Ehrlich's expert opinion on the subject of maxi dress-styling? She told us, "The one thing most women overlook with maxi dressing is making sure they use the proper undergarments. The fit of the dress should still draw in the high waist and a well-fit strapless bra is what makes the difference between a poor or perfect fit."

So there you have it: Exposed bra straps and a maxi dress that doesn't have a defined waist are a recipe for sartorial disaster. So naturally, we did a little scouring to find the best maxi dress-friendly strapless bras and the most stylish waist-defining maxi dresses on the market, along with our favorite recent street style examples of flawless maxi dress styling.

The Underrated Lululemon Item I'm Obsessed With

Leggings are the first item most people think of when they hear Lululemon. The brand has created a cult following of men and women who swear by their products. I too am part of the swear-by leggings club. From the design to the material, Lululemon leggings fit like no other.

That said, it wasn’t until this past holiday while I was home that I stepped outside of my go-to leggings and purchased another item from the brand. Fast-forward seven months and this purchase is one of the under-$50 items I get the most compliments on. You’re curious, right? I’m talking about this cropped tee. Like the brand’s leggings, the material is great (stretchy with just enough bounce but doesn’t stretch out) and the silhouette is wonderful (loose short sleeves and just the right boxy fit). It’s also not too cropped and hits right below the belly button. It’s become my go-to tee outside the gym as well, I’ll wear the piece with denim shorts and jeans on the regular. So ready to meet the underrated Lululemon top I'm obbessed with?

This Dad Shirt Is Now a Fashion-Girl Favorite

Once the province of dads who took their vacation time maybe a little bit too seriously, vintage-style Hawaiian shirts have undergone a fashion renaissance in recent seasons, and they now have the seal of approval from some of our favorite street-style stars.

Worn big and boxy over a pair of silky trousers (à la Margaret Zhang above) or cropped at the waist and paired with a pencil skirt, the tropical-print button-downs make any outfit instantly summery. Even over a plain old pair of black skinny jeans, the shirts have personality—just ask Harry Styles, who is famously fond of the trend.

If you want authentic vintage, search Etsy, eBay, or specialty sites like Aloha Shirt Shop, which stock dozens of different prints and cuts to suit any taste (well, almost any—wallflowers need not apply). Or if you'd rather shop new, you'll find options at fast-fashion brands like Zara and Mango, as well as Korean line SJYP and fashion's go-to blouse brand, Equipment.

Keep scrolling to shop more than a dozen Hawaiian shirts—new and vintage—to wear this summer (no vacation required).

The Cool Dresses French Girls Always Wear

Have you noticed the one thing all French girls are wearing this summer? It’s not a striped boater top or a trench coat or even ballet flats. It’s a cool dress style that you might not have associated with Parisians before, but it turns out you should. Breezy floral wrap dresses are in practically every French girl’s closet (and suitcase). Which styles make the cut? Ahead, we’re breaking down what to look for.

First, find a playful print. Anything from polka dots to simple vintage florals works. You can’t go wrong by sticking to a neutral color palette, including red, white, or navy. Next, the dress should have a sleeve, whether it’s long, short, or a cap sleeve. And bonus points if the neckline is finished with feminine ruffles. As for styling it, try some layered gold necklaces, espadrilles, and a woven basket bag. Now, don’t be surprised if you’re mistaken for a Parisian on your summer trip to the Côte d’Azur.

Keep reading to see how French girls are styling these cool dresses, and then shop our favorite styles from Réalisation Par, Rouje, Reformation, and more.

What Is the Average Model Height Anyway?

Historically, models are known to be tall. In some cases, very tall by most standards. For instance, Karlie Kloss and Elle “The Body” Macpherson are famously in the 6-feet-and-over club. But what does it really take to make it as a model, at least as far as height goes? We took a closer look.

We surveyed the stature of 40 of the top models we talk about the most. That includes everyone from the Hadids to VS Angels to the icons referred to simply as Kate and Naomi—no last names needed here—in our quest to discover what the average height across the board. And in some good news for the (slightly) more petite women who aspire to model one day themselves, the medium number is below 72 inches.

Forty photogenic, runway-walking, magazine-covering, selfie-taking style stars later, and the average model height, according to our calculations, is 5'9.5". Was this number close to your guess?

Click in below to see how each of these stars stacked up and how we reached our final conclusion.

Peek-A-Boo Jeans: The Coolest New Denim Trend

How often do you wear jeans, even for a night out? If you're anything like us, the answer is all the time. Well, we are currently crushing on Y/Project's scandalous assortment of denim that was basically made to be worn out on the town by cool-girls everywhere. The brand has been churning out pairs of jeans with cut-outs in extremely unconventional places that we would rather you see for yourself (below) than describe in writing. We are coining this denim trend "peek-a-boo jeans" for obvious reasons, and we have a feeling you're going to have a lot of opinions about them.

This denim trend definitely requires a little risk-taking, but the result, as proven by Gigi Hadid, is well worth it. Since the jeans make enough of a statement on their own, we recommend styling yours with a simple bodysuit or T-shirt. Ahead, we have shopped out some of our favorite versions of Y/Project's peek-a-boo jeans, including the pair that turns into shorts (sorry to leave you on a cliff hanger).

The Pretty Shoe Trend Fashion Girls Will Wear With Jeans This Fall

We know, it's not even July yet, but we've already started thinking about fall shoe trends. Among the red ankle boots, patent leather, and slouchy knee boots is one style, in particular, that we can't wait to wear with jeans: kitten-heel mules. We've already begun wearing this style here at Who What Wear, but the runways and new arrivals on some of our favorite sites prove that the trend is going to be huge this fall.

Pointed-toe kitten-heel mules are one of fall's most feminine shoe trends, but they're also unexpected enough to make any outfit cooler. So what makes kitten-heel mules so perfect with jeans? They show a bit of your foot (which is quite flattering), and you won't have to worry about what style of jeans to wear with them like you do with boots. They pair perfectly with everything from cropped flares to skinny jeans. Ready to get in on the trend before everyone else does?

Have You Noticed This Trend in H&M's Shoe Section?

Take a scroll through H&M's shoe section and you'll quickly learn the fast-fashion site has swapped high-heeled sandals for the term "sandalettes." We first thought it was just the style name of these satin sandals, since we were curious, we typed the word in the site's search bar and learned that the brand refers to all strappy sandals with a heel as ''sandalettes" on their site.

IF you're familiar with French, you'll realize the word sounds and looks quite similar to the French word for sandals "sandeles." We're into the term H&M has coined for its summer heels. Plus, it's fun to say, just try it.

Gigi Hadid Just Dressed Like Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century

Gigi Hadid, is that you? Or is Zenon from Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century finally making her fashion debut? Because if we are being honest, the resemblance is uncanny. When Gigi recently stepped out of her Manhattan apartment wearing a metallic pink matching set, we couldn't help but think back to the assortment of shiny "futuristic" outfits featured in that infamous Disney movie.

As if her out-of-this-world fringed moto jacket and flared jeans duo weren't enough, Gigi finished off her look with pink velvet platform sandals. But not just any velvet platforms—pearl-encrusted ones. Zenon fan or not, there is no denying the star-quality of this outfit, and to be completely frank, I personally am not opposed to wearing this look for my next night out. Who's with me?

These Are the New Ballerina-Inspired It Shoes

Two things practically every fashion girl cares about: ballerinas and shoes. Combine the two and you're pretty much guaranteed a sell-out. Such is exactly the case with cool shoe brand FEIT's  new collection. Each of the brand's minimalist creations is built by hand using natural materials and is produced in limited quantities. Their latest release is the Handsewn Ballet Capsule, a collection of two suede and two leather flats inspired by classical ballet shoes. The feature a flattering U-shaped design and a slim sole, which "allows the wearer to be closer to the ground".

To prove just how ballerina-approved they are, the brand enlisted Benjamin Millepied, formerly of the New York City Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet (and Natalie Portman's husband), to shoot former principal dancer for the New York City Ballet Janie Taylor actually dancing in the shoes. The beautiful film was clearly enough to convince shoppers to invest in the ballerina-inspired flats, as they're nearly sold out in a few of the shades. And you can count Millepied among the fans of the new collection. He said in a statement that the shoes "are alive, they change with time, mold to your foot, adapt to your step".

The Unexpected Engagement Ring Celebs Have Worn for 60 Years

What's the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of an engagement ring? If you're anything like us, it's probably a pretty diamond. But if a garden-variety ring doesn't cut it for you, you might want to consider the bold trend celebrities have been obsessed with for 60 years: sapphire rings.

Elizabeth Taylor, for instance, got engaged to Michael Wilding in 1952 with a massive sapphire ring surrounded by two rows of diamonds, which might qualify as one of the biggest rings in Hollywood history. As you probably already know, Taylor infamously got married eight times—her stint with Wilding lasted five years.

Of course, today's most famous sapphire engagement ring is on Kate Middleton's finger (Prince William inherited it from Princess Diana), but other celebrities have jumped on board too, including Penelope Cruz and Elizabeth Hurley. What are your thoughts on the trend?
