Olivier Rousteing is a French designer who runs a French brand, but this week, he's all about the L.A. life. The Balmain creative director is celebrating the opening of the brand's new store on Melrose Place in West Hollywood, as well as his new Beats collaboration (which none other than Kylie Jenner is the face of). We met up with Rousteing at the gorgeous new store to get the scoop about his latest projects—and yes, to chat about French-girl style too.
We know our readers share our appreciation of French style, so we were dying to know Rousteing's thoughts on the subject. He told us the one French-girl style myth he'd like to bust: "Today, the French Parisian is known for messy hair, a white T-shirt, jeans, and flat boots. I don't think it's that," he told Who What Wear. "Paris is the City of Light, and thank god there are so many women who have inspired us because they've tried to show us that the style is not only that. The most incredible Paris I know was the Paris from the '70s or '80s when they were way more daring. I'm more inspired by that than today's Paris."
As for the new L.A. store, Rousteing explained why it holds a special significance for him. "To me, it's more than opening a new store," he told us. "It's a celebration of so many things I believe in. I believe in Balmain, diversity, the American dream, music, movies, youth, freedom, and L.A. shines around the world [in all of these aspects]."
Music, in particular, is especially important for Rousteing, which explains why the collaboration with Beats was a natural fit. An even easier decision? Picking Kylie Jenner to front the campaign: "I know her as a friend, and she is who I wanted to represent what I believe in: the technology of Beats, the glamour of Balmain, and the beauty of L.A." Who can argue with that?
Read on to see how Olivier Rousteing's friends, including Kim Kardashian West and Kate Bosworth, celebrated his new store and Beats collab.
